Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a homicide where the victim sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The spent ammunition was entered into NIBIN. Four days later, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department executed a search warrant at a murder suspect’s apartment where they recovered an unlawfully possessed firearm. Using NIBIN, the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency was able to match the firearm to the earlier homicide.

Philadelphia Police Department responded to a fight which subsequently led to a shooting. The shooting victim did not sustain any gunshot wounds. The spent ammunition was entered into NIBIN. Three months later, Philadelphia Police Department responded to a report of unlawful firearms possession on a public street, arrested the suspect, and recovered the firearm. Using NIBIN, Philadelphia Police Department was able to match the firearm to the shooting.
