In July 1996, during a shooting on the corner in NYPD’s Brooklyn’s 67th Precinct two males were shot. At the scene of the shooting, 9mm and .45 caliber casings were recovered. No arrest was made in this case. In August 2000 in Brooklyn’s 71st Precinct, a male was shot three times while standing in front of a building causing his death. In this case four (4) 9mm cartridge casings were recovered. These casings were entered into IBIS, which resulted in a hit to the July 1996 shooting. No arrest was made in this case, however the main suspect was incarcerated. In August 2008, a male was arrested and charged with the possession of a Taurus PT-92 9mm Pistol, on the street in Brooklyn’s 60th Precinct. The test fires from this firearm were then entered into the IBIS/NIBIN system. The NIBIN system linked the recovered firearm to the two (2) previously mentioned shootings. In September 2008, the hit was confirmed. The first shooting occurred more than 12 years prior to the August 2008 arrest.

The Stockton (CA) Police Department using NIBIN linked evidence recovered at a shooting incident and an aggravated assault to a robbery that occurred several months later. The Stockton Police Department responded to a shots fired call. When they arrived they spoke to a victim who indicated he was in his house when he heard several gunshots outside. Officers searched the area and noticed that multiple vehicles had been damaged by gunfire. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene and submitted for entry into NIBIN. A few months later, Stockton Police Officers were dispatched to an area where two persons had been injured by gunfire. The medics arrived and transported the victims to the hospital for medical treatment. One of the victims suffered from a gunshot to the spine and was paralyzed. Several shell casings were recovered at the scene and submitted for entry into NIBIN. Eleven days later, Stockton Police Officers responded to a robbery and shots fired call. When officers arrived the security guard stated a male came into the store pointing a gun at him and demanding money. The security guard and the suspect both opened fire. The suspect was shot and when he collapsed on the ground the security officer kicked the gun out of his hand. A short time later the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. The suspect’s gun was test fired, entered into NIBIN and matched the two incidents that occurred several months earlier.
