The New Orleans Police Department using NIBIN linked evidence recovered during two aggravated assaults and a homicide, to an illegal carrying of a firearm. The New Orleans Police Department Officers responded to a shots fired call. When they arrived at the scene, they determined it was an aggravated battery by shooting. Fifteen shell casings were recovered at the scene and submitted for entry into NIBIN. Less than two weeks later, New Orleans Police Department Officers responded to a homicide. One shell casing was recovered at the scene of the crime and submitted for entry into NIBIN. One day later, New Orleans Police Department Officers responded to another shots fired call. They determined it was another aggravated battery by shooting. Four days later, the New Orleans Police Department arrested a suspect for carrying an illegal firearm. The recovered weapon was submitted for test firing, entered into NIBIN and matched the ballistic evidence recovered at the two aggravated assaults and the homicide that occurred previously.

In April 2008, an off duty New York City Corrections Officer was killed during an attempted theft of his motorcycle. During the investigation, two individuals were arrested near by and a pistol was recovered. The test fires from this firearm were then entered into the NIBIN system and it was found that this one firearm was used in six other shootings. All six shooting involved personal injuries and occurred within the five months prior to the recovery of the weapon. The recovery of the firearm and the linking of the firearm by the NIBIN database resulted in major investigative leads in the many unsolved shooting crimes.

The Washington County Minnesota Sheriff’s Office using NIBIN linked evidence recovered from a shooting and a car high jacking that occurred in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, to an arrest of a man carrying a pistol in his car. The Washington County Deputies respond to an area in Lake Elmo, (MN) on the report of a shooting. When they arrived, they noticed an Oakdale Police Officer was already on the scene and advised the deputies that there was a gun shot victim in the vehicle that needed medical attention. The other law enforcement personnel located a second victim who told them that her vehicle was taken from her at gunpoint. Seven shell casings were recovered at the scene and submitted for entry into NIBIN. Five years later, Minneapolis police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for multiple traffic violations and subsequently arrested the driver. The defendant was found to have a gun in his waistband; the officer removed and seized the weapon and hand cuffed the suspect. The firearm was test fired, entered into NIBIN, at the Minneapolis Police Department and matched the ballistic evidence recovered during the car jacking that occurred several years earlier. ATF was contacted and the trace of the recovered weapon resulted in the arrest of the original purchaser and his being charged with the car jacking and shooting five years earlier. Only by the linking of NIBIN of the gun to the five year old shooting crime was the investigation closed and the violent criminal brought to justice.
